Friday 16 8pm and Saturday 17 February 12.30pm, for approximately 60 minutesMusic has the power to transport us to a myriad of fantastical places. Be it a salon in 1730s London, a provincial German court, a bustling post-Napoleon Vienna, or the far-off lands of suburban Melbourne.
Jack writes about the program he has curated:
“When putting together this program, I was really drawn to the idea of individual spirit and vitality contrasted with an almost spiritual wonder. Each of the four pieces is an exploration of those themes through different sonic languages. I have a great love for baroque music, so the first half is a pair of baroque works by Francesco Geminiani and J.S. Bach. While only being written around ten years apart, they are such startlingly different works.
I believe that you can really feel each composer’s personality shine through. The same can absolutely be said about Beethoven’s fourth cello sonata. I find it to be a personal, almost humanist work, celebrating the human spirit.
Inspired by all these works, I wrote A Book of Lost Tales to bring a touch of fantasy. The five movements are little vignettes, like a peek into fantastical stories as they play out.”
