ABOUT GIANNA
Gianna Guttilla is an Adelaide-based soprano and Bachelor of Music (Classical Voice) graduate from the Elder Conservatorium (2018-2020), and current Honours student under the vocal tutelage of Cheryl Pickering. Gianna made her professional role debut this year as Lauretta in Co-Opera’s Production of Gianni Schicchi, touring with the company to Penola (for the Coonawarra Arts Festival), Griffith NSW, and recently in Adelaide. She also performed the role of La Sorella Infermiera in Mopoke Theatre Company’s production of Suor Angelica earlier this year. Gianna recently performed as a featured soloist with Recitals Australia as part of their 2021 Autumn Lunch Hour Series and is currently a member of Recitals Australia’s Fellowship program, which provides mentoring and performance opportunities for emerging classical artists. Gianna received the Malcolm J. Orchard Memorial Prize for performance of an Operatic Aria, and The Music Teachers Association of SA Inc. /Grace Barbara Turner Awards for Excellence in Performance at the 2021 Adelaide Eisteddfod. Gianna has performed with Patti LuPone and Alan Cumming at the 2018 and 2021 Adelaide Cabaret Festivals respectively
ABOUT PENELOPE
Penelope is an Adelaide-based vocal coach, repetiteur and collaborative pianist. After solo piano studies at the Australian National University and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, she completed a Masters in Lied Accompaniment at the Musik und Kunst Privatuniversität der Stadt Wien (in Vienna) and graduated with distinction. Penelope has performed in recital in Europe and the Antipodes, worked as a vocal accompanist and repetiteur for companies throughout Australia, and played for numerous masterclasses with leading singers and vocal accompanists, including twice attending the Franz Schubert Institut (in Baden bei Wien). In her vocal coaching work, Penelope has a particular interest in helping recent voice graduates further their studies and continue their vocal and musical development. She teaches lyric diction at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, and has been a regular visiting lecturer teaching German lyric diction and Lied interpretation at the University of Waikato Conservatorium of Music in New Zealand, where she is a Research Associate in the Music Program. In 2019 Penelope completed her PhD at the University of Adelaide, for which she received the Dean’s Commendation for Doctoral Excellence. Her thesis was entitled “International best practice in the teaching of lyric diction to conservatorium-level singers”. In 2020 Penelope was a presenter at the Conference of the Australian National Association of Teachers of Singing and received a Lisa Gasteen National Opera Program grant. Penelope is a current recipient of an Arts South Australia Professional Development Grant.
