About the Performers
Katelyn Crawford, voice
Katelyn is a mezzo soprano / soprano, classical guitarist and composer based in Adelaide. In 2022, she completed an Honours Degree of Bachelor of Music (Classical Voice) with first class honours at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, under the guidance of soprano Rosalind Martin. Katelyn also completed a Diploma in Languages (German Studies) with Advanced German at the University of Adelaide in 2021. Katelyn completed a Graduate Diploma in Music (Performance and Pedagogy) in 2023, and is commencing a PhD in classical voice performance and pedagogy in 2024.
During her classical voice studies, Katelyn has been awarded the Elder Conservatorium’s Clement Q. Williams Prize (2020), The Frederick Bevan Prize for Singing (2021), The Rae Cocking Memorial Prize (2022), The Robert Whinham Prize (2022), The Lucy Josephine Baggott Prize (2023) and The George Boland Scholarship (2023). Katelyn received a Lunch Hour Award in the Recitals Australia Lunch Hour Series Autumn Season 2022, and participated in the Recitals Australia Elder Conservatorium Fellowship Program for 2023.
Katelyn performed the role of La Zelatrice in Puccini’s opera Suor Angelica with Mopoke Theatre Productions in 2022, and was a member of the chorus in Verdi’s Messa da Reqiuem in the Adelaide Festival in 2023. Katelyn also loves to perform art songs, and has performed her own recitals in the Recitals Australia Lunch Hour Autumn Series in 2022 and 2023 with collaborative pianist Sachiko Hidaka. In 2023, Katelyn also had the opportunity to perform with pianists Alexander Hanysz and Haowei Yang as part of the Recitals Australia Elder Conservatorium Fellowship Program.
Haowei Yang, piano
Haowei Yang has performed as a soloist, accompanist, and chamber musician throughout Australia. Formally starting music journey with piano at the age of seven, Haowei shown great enthusiasm through persistent efforts and outstanding achievements, under the tutelage of Konstantin Shamray and previously Stefan Ammer, Gil Sullivan and Karen Davis. Haowei has received First Class Honours for classical performance in the Elder Conservatorium and is currently studying with Luke Dollman and Konstantin Shamray for his Master of Philosophy, while aiming to continue to PhD in the future.
Haowei has been very involved in the music scene ever since moving to Australia and have received a wide range of awards at Adelaide Eisteddfod, including the Special Awards Miriam Hyde Medallion and the Lady Anne Miller Award. During his undergraduate degree, Haowei received many scholarships and prizes including, Daisy Burmeister Salotti Scholarship for Pianoforte, E Harold Davies Prize, and Alexander Clark Memorial Prize. He has also embarked on external internships with Accompanist Guild SA, Co Opera, and the JMCCCP to expand his view in the music industry and in 2023, Haowei received the Recital Australia Fellowship.
Haowei has performed at many events across Adelaide, including at the PianoLab with Recitals Australia, at locations such as North Adelaide Baroque Hall, Flinders Street Baptist Church, Government House and Elder Hall. Most recently, he joined the incredible New World Players chamber ensemble and returned from the sold-out shows across Australia led by acclaimed conductor Eric Roth. Haowei Yang is also a part of the chamber ensemble, Apricus with Paula Custodio (flute) and Bridget McCullough (viola) who are working on a recording project for newly commissioned works. Haowei will also be performing Ravel’s Left-Hand Concerto with the Elder Conservatorium Orchestra in September of 2024.
Haowei has also been studying organ with Josh van Konkelenberg and received the St Peter’s Cathedral Organ Scholarship (2016-2018). He is currently playing organ for the graduations and other events for the University of Adelaide and in different churches.
Paula Custodio, flute
Paula Custodio is a Philippine born, Adelaide-based flautist and piccolo player. She has recently completed her Bachelors of Performance (Classical) and was awarded First Class Honours in the Elder Conservatorium (University of Adelaide). Paula has studied under Elizabeth Koch OAM, Kathryn Moorhead, Dr Juila Grenfell (Adelaide Symphony Orchestra) and Melissa Farrow (Australian Brandenburg Orchestra). In her earlier years, Paula has had many successes in the Adelaide Eisteddfods and was a member of the Adelaide Youth Orchestras from 2015 to 2019. She has been a recipient of a music scholarship in her high school years and recently has completed her AMusA (2021) and has received the Associate prize.
Performance-wise, Paula has had extensive experiences in both symphonic and woodwind orchestras and has worked under the baton of Luke Dollman, Bryan Griffiths and Nicholas Braithwaite. As a chamber musician, she is a regular performer at the Flinders Street lunchtime concert series. She has performed at UKARIA cultural centre through the Adelaide Festival and has performed a recital in the newly developed North Adelaide Baroque Hall. Paula is very passionate about chamber performance, which has seen her learn under members of the Australian String Quartet and Dr Konstantin Shamary with her trio, Apricus, where she is both a founder and core member, alongside Bridget McCollough (viola) and Haowei Yang (piano).
She has performed with AWR production’s Australian tour of A New World: intimate music from FINAL FANTASY. The tour has seen her travel and perform with American music director and arranger, Eric Roth, for sold out shows in Brisbane, Sydney, Canberra, Newcastle and Adelaide. She has also worked with the Burnside Symphony Orchestra as a soloist performing, Mozart Flute Concerto no. 1 and has had lessons with Josh Batty and Michael Cox. Her other upcoming projects this year includes performing in the Recitals at the Fringe series, a recording project with her chamber group, working on Celia Craig’s (oboist) media and communications team and preparation for postgraduate studies abroad in Europe.
