ABOUT JENNY
Jenny, an Adelaide local, is a recent graduate of the Elder Conservatorium. She earned a Bachelor of Music (Advanced) with First Class Honours (1) under the mentorship of Lucinda Collins. Throughout her studies, Jenny has been the recipient of several scholarships, including the Maude Harriot and Patrick Cecil Greenland Scholarships for Piano, along with the Daisy Burmeister Salotti and Jack De Vos Scholarships.
Jenny has refined her skills through masterclasses with world-renowned pianists such as Angela Hewitt, Paavali Jumpannen, Stephan Kovacevich, Phillip Moll, and Paloma Kouider. She has been recognised for her musical excellence with multiple accolades, including winning the Senior division in both attending years 2021 and 2024. She also emerged as the state finalist of the Young Virtuoso Competition in both 2023 and 2024.
Notable performances in Jenny’s career include appearances at the Art of Possible Festival, PianoLab, and collaborations with Stephen King and Helen Ayres for the AGSA Ruby Festival and Lunch Hour Series. She was also selected for the Top-Class Concert of the Lunch Hour Series, where she was awarded the Peter Brooker Prize for Musical Excellence. In 2023, Jenny represented South Australia at the Australian Showcase for the Sydney International Piano Competition.
ABOUT KAI
Kai Gerbi is a current Masters student at the Elder Conservatorium of Music. He commenced Bachelors (Classical Performance – Violin) under Dr Elizabeth Layton in 2016 and completed it in 2018. He subsequently completed an Honors of Musicology in 2020, obtaining the distinction of First Class. Alongside his institutional studies he has augmented his learning by submitting himself as a pupil to Professor Stefan Ammer and Dr John Polglase. These relationships he treasures as foundation stones upon which his relationship to music is built. His Masters research takes a deep inquiry into the Russian composer Sergei Taneyev and his theories regarding counterpoint and canonic composition, with plans on producing a second edition to his Convertible Counterpoint in the Strict Style. Other projects which Kai is engaged with include a translation of the second book of Zarlino’s four-part L’istitutioni Harmoniche on which he is collaborating with Nicholas Dennett and a new system of technical work for the violin which he is preparing for his students. Kai teaches both violin and musicianship at the Open Music Academy of the Elder Conservatorium and has been the dedicatee of compositions by John Polglase and Adrians Ozols.
ABOUT ALEX
Alex Byrne is an honours student at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, University of Adelaide, having recently completed his Bachelor of Music (Advanced) – Classical Performance course under the tutelage of Dr Julia Grenfell, and previously Elizabeth Koch AM. Alex recently made his concerto debut with the Adelaide Youth Orchestra (of which he was previously a member), performing Mozart’s Flute Concerto in D major.
Alex is a casual musician with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and has played in the Elder Conservatorium Wind Orchestra and Symphony Orchestra as well as being selected as a member of the Australian Youth Orchestra Camp 2024. Alex was recently selected as a fellow for the Recitals Australia program and has experienced successes in the Adelaide Eisteddfods. He has received numerous awards and scholarships including the Victor Edgeloe Scholarship for Woodwind, the Cowan Family Grant, Robert Brown Grant, the David Cubbin Medallion, and he received first prize in the Elder Conservatorium Top Class 2024 competition.
ABOUT ANGUS
Angus McBride is an Adelaide-born and based bassoonist currently studying at the University of Adelaide where he is completing a Bachelor of Music (Advanced) (Classical Performance) with Leah Stephenson and Mark Gaydon, and a Bachelor of Science (Advanced). Angus regularly performs on bassoon and contrabassoon with the Elder Conservatorium Wind Orchestra, Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, Adelaide Youth Orchestra, and Adelaide Wind Orchestra with whom he travelled in July to Gwangju South Korea to perform for the 2024 World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) conference.
He has also previously taken part in the Australian Romantic and Classical Orchestra’s (ARCO) Young Mannheim Symphonists program, a music camp teaching historically informed performance. As well as regularly performing with many ensembles, Angus is also an enthusiastic chamber musician and has performed with various groups, with performing with the Australian String Quartet in the Elder Hall Lunchtime Concert Series being a recent highlight. Angus is passionate about music education and in recent years has performed in educational tours to the mid-north with the Adelaide Youth Orchestra and has been a bassoon tutor for the South Australian state music camp. As well as being a current Recital’s Australia Fellow, Angus is currently participating in the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s orchestral trainee program being run in conjunction with the Elder Conservatorium of Music. When Angus isn’t playing the bassoon or making reeds, he enjoys reading, gardening, and spending time with his schnoodle Gerald.
ABOUT LUCY
Hailing from Sydney, Violinist Lucy Macourt is a dynamic and accomplished musician with a passion for performance and pedagogy. Lucy performs regularly with the Adelaide and Canberra Symphony Orchestras, teaches at St Peter’s Girls and Pulteney Grammar Schools and is an active member of the Australian String Teachers Association’s committee. Lucy’s students have won multiple scholarships and competition prizes over the last several years, following in Lucy’s own footsteps.
Lucy completed her Bachelor of Music (Performance) at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2019, studying under Dr. Goetz Richter. During her time there, Lucy earned multiple prestigious awards, including the Matteson and Nancy Scholarship, the Kathleen and Allison Short Scholarship, and the Sydney Scholars Award. Before her degree, she was part of the Conservatorium’s Rising Stars program with Dr. Evgeny Sorkin. Lucy is also an alumnus of the Australian Youth Orchestra and interned with the Opera Australia Orchestra. In 2020, Lucy moved to Canberra to join the Canberra Symphony Orchestra’s Kingsland Artistic Residency Program, where she continues to perform regularly as a section violinist. She also curated a series of chamber music and solo recitals for the Wesley Music Centre and toured regional NSW and the ACT with her trio, The Olive Trio (featuring harp, oboe, and violin).
Alongside her performing career, Lucy built a thriving private teaching practice, with students earning top prizes at the Wollongong Eisteddfod and securing scholarships to leading music schools in Sydney and Canberra. In 2023, Lucy relocated to Adelaide to further her studies in performance and pedagogy at the Elder Conservatorium of Music under Dr. Elizabeth Layton. She received the David Galliver Memorial Scholarship that year, and in 2024, was awarded the Decie Denholm Scholarship, which enabled her to undertake historical performance training with the Tafelmusik Orchestra in Canada and further pedagogy training at the Center Stage Strings Festival.
ABOUT BRIDGET
Bridget McCullough is a classical violist who is currently undertaking her final year of Bachelor of Music Honours (Advanced) at the Elder Conservatorium of Music. She was under the tutelage of Keith Crellin from 2016-2022 and is currently studying with Stephen King. Bridget is a participant of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra 2024 Traineeship program and the Recitals Australia 2024 Fellowship. She is passionate about chamber music and has received the Elder Conservatorium Recording Fund with Serendipity Trio and regularly performs with the Torrens String Quartet, including in their recent community outreach concert series supported by the Australian String Quartet’s NAQ Accelerator Program.
Bridget enjoys performing solo recitals and has performed for a variety of lunchtime concert series’ including Recitals Australia, Baroque Hall and Flinders Street. Bridget is principal viola in the Elder Conservatorium Baroque Ensemble and in 2023 attended the Young Mannheim Symphonists National Academy. In 2023 and 2024, she attended the Australian Youth Orchestra National Music Camp and performed in the 2024 Winter Season, and in 2023 she was principal viola in the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra and the Elder Conservatorium Chamber Orchestra. In 2022 and 2023, Bridget was the recipient of the Varley Scholarship and Exhibition. When Bridget is not performing, she enjoys teaching music at Nazareth Catholic College.
ABOUT ADAM
Adam first picked up the trombone 8 years ago and has loved performing on it ever since. He is currently studying Classical Performance at the Elder Conservatorium of Music under the tutorage of Howard Parkinson. As part of the Adelaide Wind Orchestra, Adam recently travelled to South Korea to take part in the World Association for Symphonic Wind Bands and Ensembles (WASBE) conference, as well as participating in the Orchestral traineeship within the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra.
ABOUT SIMÓN
Simón Pazos Quintana is a Spanish-born, Adelaide-based classical pianist, accompanist and teacher.
He obtained his Bachelor of Music with First Class Honours at the Elder Conservatorium of Music in Adelaide, under the tutelage of Professor Stefan Ammer. In 2018, he made his concerto debut with the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of maestro James Lowe. Later that year, he was awarded the Peter Schodde Memorial Piano Scholarship, with which he travelled throughout Germany, Austria and England, playing for highly respected professors and performers to further his technical abilities and musicianship.
Upon his return to Adelaide, Simón was a finalist in the 2019, 2021 and 2023 Geoffrey Parsons
Awards for piano accompaniment. He accompanies classes and exams in the Elder Conservatorium, where he is also a piano teacher as part of the Open Music Academy. He is a sought-after accompanist and regularly features in the Recitals Australia lunchtime concerts.
Simón completed his performance-based PhD last year under the supervision of pianist Konstantin Shamray. The doctorate was centred around recordings of the full works for solo piano by composer Aleksandr Mosolov and was awarded with a Dean’s Commendation.
As a solo recital pianist, Simón performed in the 2024 PianoLab festival, where he presented works by Mosolov, and will feature in the Elder Conservatorium 2025 Lunchtime Concert Series in September, performing works by Dvořák and Turina.
