ABOUT KAI

Kai Gerbi is a current Masters student at the Elder Conservatorium of Music. He commenced Bachelors (Classical Performance – Violin) under Dr Elizabeth Layton in 2016 and completed it in 2018. He subsequently completed an Honors of Musicology in 2020, obtaining the distinction of First Class. Alongside his institutional studies he has augmented his learning by submitting himself as a pupil to Professor Stefan Ammer and Dr John Polglase. These relationships he treasures as foundation stones upon which his relationship to music is built. His Masters research takes a deep inquiry into the Russian composer Sergei Taneyev and his theories regarding counterpoint and canonic composition, with plans on producing a second edition to his Convertible Counterpoint in the Strict Style. Other projects which Kai is engaged with include a translation of the second book of Zarlino’s four-part L’istitutioni Harmoniche on which he is collaborating with Nicholas Dennett and a new system of technical work for the violin which he is preparing for his students. Kai teaches both violin and musicianship at the Open Music Academy of the Elder Conservatorium and has been the dedicatee of compositions by John Polglase and Adrians Ozols.
