ABOUT GEMMA
Gemma is a classical music performance student at the Elder Conservatorium. She completed her Bachelor of Music in 2022 studying flute under Elizabeth Koch AM, and more recently, Kathryn Moorhead, and aims to complete her honours in performance in 2023.
Gemma has a vast range of experience as a performer; currently, she is an active member of the Adelaide Youth Orchestra and Elder Conservatorium Symphony. She has been awarded the 2021 Victor Edgeloe Scholarship for woodwind and was the winner of the 2022 Mrs Arno (May Gepp) Pontt Prize, and the 2022 The Selborne Moutray Russell Prize.
She recently achieved a distinction for her Associate in Music (AMusA) examination for AMEB. This year Gemma is a participant in the Recitals Australia Fellowship Program in collaboration with the Elder Conservatorium, and recently made her debut with the Elder Conservatorium Wind Orchestra performing Mike Mower’s Concerto for flute and wind orchestra.
ABOUT KATELYN
Katelyn Crawford is a mezzo soprano / soprano, classical guitarist, and composer based in Adelaide. In 2022, she completed a Bachelor of Music (Classical Voice) with First Class Honours at the Elder Conservatorium of Music, under the guidance of soprano Rosalind Martin. Katelyn also completed a Diploma in Languages (German Studies) with Advanced German at the University of Adelaide in 2021.
During her classical voice studies, Katelyn was awarded the Elder Conservatorium’s Clement Q. Williams Prize (2020), The Frederick Bevan Prize (2021), The Rae Cocking Memorial Prize (2022), and The Robert Whinham Prize (2022). Katelyn received an Award in the Recitals Australia Lunch Hour Series Autumn Season 2022.
Katelyn is currently undertaking a Graduate Diploma in Music (Performance and Pedagogy) in Classical Voice, and has been awarded The George Boland Scholarship by the Elder Conservatorium. In 2023, Katelyn is a participant in the Recitals Australia Fellowship Program in collaboration with the Elder Conservatorium.
Katelyn performed the role of La Zelatrice in Puccini’s opera Suor Angelica with Mopoke Theatre Productions in 2022, and was a member of the chorus in Verdi’s Messa da Reqiuem in the Adelaide Festival in 2023. Katelyn also loves to perform art songs, and has performed in the Recitals Australia Lunch Hour Autumn Series in 2022 and 2023 with collaborative pianist Sachiko Hidaka. In 2023, Katelyn also performed with pianist Alexander Hanysz as part of the Recitals Australia Fellowship Program.
ABOUT ESMOND
Esmond Choi is an Australian pianist/composer who is currently a post-graduate at the Elder Conservatorium of Music researching on how one can employ, experience, and enrich one’s own understanding of oneself as a musician through American Transcendentalism. He currently holds eight scholarships, which include The Daisy Burmeister Salotti Scholarship for Pianoforte, The Diana Harris Prize for Accompaniment and The Maude Puddy Scholarship. He has played for Jean-Efflam Bavouzet, Nicholas Mathew, Paavali Jumppanen, Neal Peres Da Costa, Stefan Ammer and Albert Tiu. Esmond is the current pianist for the Novus ensemble, and he is the current organist for St. Cuthbert’s Anglican Church. He has collaborated with numerous ensembles including the Elder Conservatorium Symphony Orchestra and recently performed (under the name of Elder Music Lab) George Crumb’s Metamorphoses Book I. Esmond participated in PianoLab and performed George Crumb’s Eine Kleine Mitternachtmusik, and received a review from Limelight saying “…Choi’s captivating performance was a revelation…”.
This year, Esmond had made his solo debut at Tempo Rubato, Melbourne, and received great success. Under the leadership of Dr Luke Dollman, Esmond and a few other musicians were selected to be part of a collaboration project with Yong Siew Toh Conservatory’s new music ensemble OpusNovus and presented a new music concert in Adelaide and Singapore. Esmond is currently participating in the Recitals Australia’s fellowship program.
ABOUT HAOWEI
Haowei Yang is a first-class Honours graduate currently undertaking his Master of Philosophy (classical piano) at the Elder Conservatorium. He is currently a student of Konstantin Shamray and previously studied with Stefan Ammer, Gil Sullivan, and Karen Davis. He has consistently received High Distinctions in AMEB piano examinations, and has won a wide range of awards at the Adelaide Eisteddfod, including the Miriam Hyde Medallion (for the most promising pianist aged 16 years or under) and the Lady Anne Miller Award (for Piano Aggregate). Throughout his university studies, Haowei has consistently received prestigious awards each year.
Haowei has also embarked on external internships with Accompanist Guild SA, Co Opera, the JMCCCP, and performed at the Piano Lab and Baroque Hall, to expand his view in the music industry. Recently, he has toured Australia with AWR Productions in Final Fantasy Distant Worlds to sold out venues. During 2024, he will perform Ravel’s piano concerto for the left hand with the Elder Conservatorium Orchestra. Haowei has also been studying organ with Josh van Konkelenberg, and received the St Peter’s Cathedral Organ Scholarship (2016–2018). He is currently playing organ for graduations and other events for the University of Adelaide and in churches.
