Internationally recognised artists Rachel Johnston (cello) and Ashley Hribar (piano) come together for an intimate concert “Bach and Beyond”, exploring a polyphonic journey through traditional and contemporary works. Ashley and Rachel join us from a recently completed extensive international tours.
The program features a rich exploration of classical and contemporary music including:
- the Bach-Brahem Suite: a seamless expression of polyphony featuring selected J.S Bach Preludes for keyboard and cello and Anouar Brahem’s Leila au pays du carrousel and C’est Ailleurs.
- Arvo Pärt Frates
- Ashley Hribar Journey to Damascus.
The program will also feature the Adelaide premiere of ‘Hanging Rock‘ Sonata for Cello and Piano by composer Michael Sollis.
The concert is expected to last approximately 100 minutes, including interval.
Hailed as a ‘brilliant pianist and an exceptional artist’ (Heilbronner Stimme, Stuttgart), Australian born Ashley Hribar is solo artist, improviser and composer. As a leading advocate of contemporary music, his is known for exploring unconventional paths that push the boundaries and expressive capabilities of the instrument. Recent projects include EMBRACE; a solo performance using keyboards, loops and delay techniques; TRIΔNGULΔTION, a multi-media collaboration with composer Damian Marhulets and Marina Baranova; and Olivier Messiaen’s monumental piano cycle; Vingt regards sur l’enfant-jésus.
Winner of the 2005 International Gaudeamus Interpreters Competition in Amsterdam and the 2008 Michael Kieren-Harvey Scholarship, Ashley has since worked with numerous living composers including Felix Kubin, Helmut Lachenmann, Matthew Shlomowitz. As a PhD candidate at the University of Adelaide, he is currently working closely with composer Frederic Rzewski focusing on his works for and speech, extended performance techniques and improvisation.
He is indebted to the following teachers in Australia; Stefan Ammer, Gil Sullivan, Stephen McIntyre, Dr. Graham Williams (pupil of Olivier Messiaen and Yvonne Loriod) and in Germany with Prof. Karl-Heinz Kaemmerlin
Originally from New Zealand, Rachel played for 7 years as a member of the Australian String Quartet and has become one of Australia’s best known cellists. She has performed for audiences across the country from the Sydney Opera House to Far North Queensland and the Pilbara as well as regularly in the UK and Europe. She has appeared with various ensembles and as a soloist at many of the country’s leading festivals including the Australian Festival of Chamber Music in Townsville, the Adelaide International Cello Festival and Musica Viva’s Huntington Festival of Music; and has collaborated with many great artists from Australia and abroad such as Anne-Sophie von Otter, Alina Abragimova, Piers Lane, Teddy Tahu Rhodes, Liwei, Pieter Wispelwey, Nicholas Altstaedt, Slava Grigoryan, Sara Macliver, Fiona Campbell and the Goldner and Juilliard Quartets. As a sought after performer, improviser and teacher Rachel has taught master classes and given improvisation workshops in NZ, Australia, the UK, Singapore, China and New York. Rachel is currently based in Adelaide where she divides her time between performing, teaching cello and studying towards a PhD at the Elder Conservatorium.
